EPA 608: What Each Type Covers

How the exams actually run

Every test is built from an EPA test bank and administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization. The EPA itself does not run the exams and does not issue the cards.

The structure is core plus type. Each separate type test has 25 core questions on the regulations, environmental impact, and general refrigerant handling, plus 25 questions specific to the type. A Universal exam is 100 questions: the core plus all three type sections. You can also assemble Universal by passing the separate type tests, with one restriction the EPA states directly: a core test taken open book cannot count toward Universal.
