Quoting is the leading AI use case in the trades. What the tools generate, what they work from, and where the estimate still depends on the technician.
The short version
Quoting is the most-reported artificial intelligence (AI) use case in the home service trades. According to Jobber, 54 percent of home service owners using AI apply it to creating estimates, quotes, or contracts. The tools generate a draft from templates and past quotes, benchmark a price against a regional average, and send follow-ups when the customer has not responded. None of the tools walks the property. The homeowner pays for a wrong scope as a change order for work the original quote missed, or as a system that underperforms because something the installation needed was left off the price.
The tools can propose what goes on the quote; they cannot verify it against the property. The tools solve document assembly, pricing lookups, and follow-up, and a shop using them gets quotes out faster and more consistently. The scope still belongs to whoever walked the property.
What AI quoting tools actually do
The quoting platforms cover three tasks: AI generates a draft, AI benchmarks a price, and a timed automation sends the follow-up.
Draft generation. Jobber launched auto-drafted quotes in September 2025. The feature turns a new job request into a draft quote using existing templates and past quotes. Jobber describes the output as “automatically generated using existing templates and past quotes, ready to review and send.” A Jobber user reviews the draft before it reaches the customer. ServiceTitan’s Titan Intelligence (TI) generates estimate names and summaries in its field mobile app from the job summary, completed forms, and estimate items the technician already entered. According to ServiceTitan’s documentation, the generated summaries “complement but do not replace estimate line item descriptions that show pricing and quantities.”
Price benchmarking. ServiceTitan’s Price Insights, part of Pricebook Pro, calculates the average selling price for each service in a contractor’s region using invoice data from opted-in ServiceTitan customers. The comparison updates daily. Juliette Armour, Principal Product Manager for Data at ServiceTitan, describes the regional average as “calculated by taking the average price for that service across all the customers whose circles overlap with each other.” The feature shows a contractor’s price next to the regional average, so the shop sees where its price sits without guessing.
Automated follow-up. Jobber and Housecall Pro both send a reminder when a quote goes unanswered. Jobber triggers follow-up messages after a quote is sent, and the shop can customize the timing and the content. In its February 2026 product release, Housecall Pro added automation triggers that fire when an estimate is sent, so a follow-up reaches the customer without anyone remembering to send it. The follow-up runs on elapsed time, and Housecall Pro can also stop a campaign once the customer acts. Neither reads why a quote is sitting, so without separate campaigns a customer comparing three quotes and a customer who lost the email get the same message.
None of these three tasks verifies the work against the property. Jobber’s draft comes from the request details, the templates, and past quotes. The price comes from a pricebook or a regional average. The automation sends the follow-up on a schedule. The tools work from whatever reached the software, and none of them replaces the site visit.
What the tools work from
These features start from what reaches the platform: the customer’s request, templates, past quotes, pricebook line items, and forms filled out on the job.
Jobber’s auto-drafted quotes use the details from the request, the shop’s quote templates, and past quotes to build a draft for review. Jobber does not publish how that feature picks among past quotes. A shop that has quoted fifty water heater installs has plenty of relevant history to draw on. A shop quoting its first mini-split installation has no such history.
ServiceTitan’s TI lets the technician select three inputs for an estimate summary: the job summary, completed forms, and the estimate items already on the ticket. A free-text field takes additional instructions and recommendations. The AI writes a customer-facing description of what the technician entered. ServiceTitan documents TI as a name and summary generator, not a line item editor. ServiceTitan advises technicians to review “generated output for accuracy before saving, especially for technical details or customer-specific information.”
The New Flat Rate is a menu pricing platform for residential service contractors. It generates tiered pricing menus from a diagnostic checklist the technician completes on-site. The result is a set of options at different price points. Danielle Putnam, CEO of The New Flat Rate, says the goal is to “improve the efficiency of job pricing, allowing technicians to close more jobs and ultimately generate more revenue each day.” The AI generates the document and the options. The checklist inputs come from the technician.
The common thread is that the AI works from data the platform can reach. Template-based quoting is fast and consistent, and consistency is most of what these tools solve for. Somebody decided what goes into the template.
Where the quote breaks
The expensive quoting errors are scope errors, not price errors. A price on a line item is checkable against a regional average. A job scoped wrong at the right price still loses money.
A scope goes wrong at the quoting stage in three ways:
The work is understated. A system replacement quote looks cheaper on paper and turns into a change order on-site when it omits return ductwork modifications, a refrigerant lineset that needs rerouting, or a disconnect that needs replacing. The technician who walked the job either missed the condition or assumed the office would add it, and the software priced what it was handed. Change orders erode the customer’s trust in the price they agreed to. On a residential replacement, the difference between what was quoted and what the work actually requires can run into hundreds or thousands of dollars.
The work is overstated. A repair quote that recommends a full system replacement costs the homeowner money they did not need to spend. So does an accessory package included because the template has it rather than because the installation supports it. A homeowner who discovers the system could have been repaired does not call back.
The options do not match the installation. In good-better-best quoting, the customer chooses from three or more options at different price points. The format is common in residential HVAC replacement sales. The tiers work when every option is something the home can support. For a house with undersized ductwork, a high-efficiency system quoted as the top-tier option is not the right choice, because the ductwork limits what the equipment can deliver. The same applies to equipment rated for a lower static pressure than the duct system produces, or to a variable-speed system quoted without the thermostat and wiring it requires. A quote that does not account for these conditions overpromises, and the customer discovers the gap after the installation rather than before.
AI produces the document faster. It does not make the scope decision more accurate, and a shop quoting a wrong scope faster gets the wrong answer out sooner.

From the quoting side, I notice that the tools solve the assembly problem well and the scope problem not at all. A shop running flat-rate quoting through Jobber or ServiceTitan gets a professional document fast, and speed matters when the customer is comparing three shops. But the hardest quoting errors I have seen are scope errors where the person who walked the job missed a condition, and the software priced what it was handed. The document looked right because the template was right. The job was wrong because the scope was wrong.
AI that helps at the equipment is a different problem from AI that assembles a price for work already decided. At the equipment, the technician is deciding what the system needs. Both problems are worth solving.

Jobber and ServiceTitan are field service management (FSM) platforms that include quoting as one part of a larger system covering scheduling, dispatch, invoicing, and customer communication. The quoting AI is part of the platform the shop already runs. Jobber’s drafts use that shop’s own templates and past quotes, while ServiceTitan’s Price Insights uses invoices that other ServiceTitan customers agreed to share over the past two years.

- Check that every option in a tiered quote matches the installation, because a high-efficiency system quoted for a house with undersized ductwork overpromises what the equipment can deliver.
- Compare your pricebook to a regional benchmark at least annually, because material and equipment costs shift and a price set eighteen months ago may sit well below the current market.
- Scope the job from the site visit rather than from the phone call, because a replacement quote built from a phone description misses ductwork, electrical, and access conditions the technician would have caught.
- Track which quotes get approved and which stall, because the pattern shows whether your problem is price, scope, speed, or follow-up.
- Read the manufacturer’s installation requirements before selecting equipment for a quote, because quoting a system that the ductwork or the electrical service cannot support is a scope error no quoting software will catch.

- Do not send an AI-drafted quote without reading every line item, because the template that fit the last fifty jobs may not fit this one.
