How Do I Become A Medical Coder & Biller?

Becoming a Medical Coder & Biller requires a combination of education, hands-on experience, and technical skill. These can typically be acquired through a trade school or vocational program, community college, or 4-year university, depending on the breadth of knowledge and experience required. Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology

Students will develop proficiency in CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding systems, learning how to apply medical codes for billing and reimbursement. They will gain hands-on experience using computerized coding software and electronic health records (EHR). Emphasis is placed on compliance, accuracy, and proper coding for various medical procedures and diagnoses.

ICD-10-CM/PCS Coding

Students will learn ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding, focusing on diagnostic and procedural coding for different medical conditions and treatments. Topics include diseases of all major organ systems, injuries, external causes, pregnancy, and surgical procedures. They will develop skills in code selection, documentation analysis, and reimbursement methodologies for healthcare facilities.

Math & Computer Applications

Students will develop math skills for medical billing, including insurance claims and reimbursements. They will gain proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and data management while enhancing resume writing, job search, and interview skills to prepare for a career in medical coding and billing.

Externship, Internship & Early Experience

Students will gain hands-on experience in medical records, coding, billing, and claims processing in a real-world healthcare setting. This externship reinforces classroom training, providing exposure to health information management, compliance standards, and professional communication. It prepares students for entry-level roles in medical coding and billing.
